My Favorite 9 Podcasting Accessories To Sound Like a Professional

Storytelling can help you be a compelling podcast host and a memorable expert guest.

Jennifer Henczel

We’re no strangers to a budget around here, but we do have some favorite podcast accessories that are just so tempting! Whether you’re looking for a new microphone, or some sound panels to help get rid of that echo, we’ve got some fantastic choices in podcast accessories for you to check out.

Microphone

In the TB studio, we use the Rode Procaster. It’s an XLR microphone (meaning the three-prong plug instead of USB) and it really changed our sound. From using a cheaper microphone in a closet with a blanket over my head, to upgrading to this microphone – worth every penny. We did spring for the boom arm because we needed something to hold the microphone, of course.

Audio Interface

Because of having the XLR microphone, we did need to splurge on an audio interface, that is the connection between the computer and the microphone.

We went with the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, 3rd generation. Since we’ve never used an audio interface before, we wanted something simple, cheap-ish, and easy to use out of the box. This product ticked off all those boxes. It’s capable of holding two XLR microphones, which is more than enough. World Herstory is mostly a scripted, solo-hosted show, and our guests are from around the world and are interviewed online.

Sound Proof Panels

We went for studio-chic with our choice of panels! They were a set of 12 for less than $30 USD. It helped mute out the noise of my voice bouncing off the corner of the room and improved the sound quality.

Do you NEED these? Blankets work just fine. Are they fun to have and make you feel like the ultimate professional? 10,000% yes.

Headphones

These may not seem necessary, but they really are. While editing, they can help you figure out how your noise levels need to be, and when interviewing/being interviewed for a podcast online, it prevents feedback from everyone talking and still helps lock in that rich sound. This is one of those podcast accessories that’s a NEED in our book.

The next few podcast accessories are about setting up a studio if you plan on doing video podcasts as well as audio.

Ring Light

All the rage across the board for content creators – we know! But it’s honestly a cheap and effective way to help change the lighting in the immediate space around you. You don’t need anything large and crazy – but we have several obnoxiously large ones because we go extra hard.

Studio Background

We’re huge fans of KATE backgrounds. They’re reasonably priced, and they’re a really great cloth that can be easily washed. If you need to hide the mess behind you, say no more! Getting a backdrop is a great way to give that studio feel.

GoPro

We have a couple of GoPro’s in the studio because we are avid travelers and landscape photographers, and they hook up to our laptops as a webcam! They give such a crisp video, and you can stream with them as well.

10/10 recommend investing in a GoPro for your video if you don’t already have one. Plus, it’s a super versatile camera – you can enjoy using it for anything other than just your podcast.

External Hard Drive

Podcasts can eat up space quickly, we recommend backing your files up! And/or, utilizing an external hard drive for your sound files so you’re not bogging down your computer.

We trust the brand LaCie implicitly. They hold terabytes of our travel photos and videos, and we trust them with our sound files as well.

Airtable

While this isn’t necessarily an accessory, we share how wonderful it is anyway. Airtable is free to use and has fantastic free templates to help you stay organized with your podcast. Especially if you have sponsors and guests you’re keeping track of, it’s an organizing lifesaver.
